Fabian Schmidt

Fabian Schmidt, sociologist and film historian, is a researcher in the DFG long-term project “(Con)sequential Images – An archaeology of iconic film footage from the Nazi era” (2021-2029) at Babelsberg Film University und an associated researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History (LBIDH).

He is a PhD student at Babelsberg Film University, where he also has a teaching position. He is a peer reviewer for Apparatus-Journal and the author and director of a cinema documentary on the importance of film documents for Holocaust memory (working title “Atrocity Film”).

At the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History (LBIDH), Fabian Schmidt was a researcher in the EU Horizon 2020 project “Visual History of the Holocaust: Rethinking Curation in the Digital Age” (2019-2023), in which he supported from 2021 to 2023 the project’s Israeli team (led by Tobias Ebbrecht-Hartmann at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) in researching popular culture materials. At LBIDH he is currently preparing a project on the “Perpetrator Gaze”.
