Michael Loebenstein

Michael Loebenstein is director of the Austrian Film Museum.

2000-2004 author (e.g. Falter and kolik.film) and freelance curator and media designer; 2004-2011 curator at the Austrian Film Museum and researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for History and Society (LBIGG) in Vienna. From 2011 to January 2017 CEO of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (Canberra/Sydney).
Author and editor of numerous publications in book form, on DVD and on the web.

At the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for History and Society he was, among other things, a collaborator in the research projects “Like Seen on the Screen. The Media and our Environment” (Sparking Science) and “Film.Stadt.Wien: A Transdisciplinary Exploration of Vienna as a Cinematic City” (2009-2011, WWTF Vienna Science and Technology Fund) as well as 2011-2013 co-leader and 2014-2016 advisor of the project “Ephemeral Films: National Socialism in Austria” (Future Fund of the Republic of Austria). From February to June 2017, he was a consultant and research assistant in the project “I-Media-Cities” (EU Horizon 2020), which he has continued in his new position as director of the Austrian Film Museum. From 2019-2023 he was the co-coordinator of the project “Visual History of the Holocaust: Rethinking Curation in the Digital Age
