Nicolai S. Gütermann

Nicolai Gütermann, film scholar, film archivist, filmmaker, was assistant to the institute’s director and responsible for information technology and communication from 2013 to 2023.

From 2011 to 2016 he was project manager for digitisation of cine film and responsible for the Digital Archive at the Austrian Film Museum. He graduated in Theatre, Film and Media Studies (BA) in Vienna, the Film Restoration Summer School of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) on analogue and digital restoration practice in Bologna and the diploma course for event organisation and technology of the Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus (WUK, VOT 2001), specialising in audiovisual documentation of events.

Before that, he studied in a free combination of subjects at the University of Vienna, which gave him the opportunity to combine courses from other faculties and universities as part of an extraordinary degree programme: Course on the Design and Realisation of Videos in Science at the Media Office of the University of Technology, Cultural and Intellectual History at the University of Applied Arts, seminars at the Vienna Film Academy as well as with Harun Farocki at the Academy of Fine Arts. Parallel to his studies, he worked as a technician in cinema and projection technology, at St. Balbach Art Produktion (Seniorenkino NÖ, Volxkino, etc.), as technical director of the short film festival Alpinale (Nenzing, 2007) and in the technical team of the Austrian Film Museum, Blickle Kino at Belevdere 21 and the Vienna Shorts Film Festival. He has been self-employed as a video documentation company since 2005 and works for Tanzquartier Wien (TQW), Documenta 12 Magazines and numerous freelance artists.
